What inspired you to try a triathlon?

I did my first one in 1997 at an Ulster schools event and really enjoyed it. But other sports got in the way so it wasn’t until 2010 when my rugby career (well social rugby) was coming to an end and I needed “a fix” a couple of guys I knew were having a go so I just tagged along to see how I’d go. Once I got the first one over I was hooked.

Where and when was your first triathlon? What was the distance?

July 2010, Lisburn Triathlon and it was a sprint distance/felt like an ironman.

Do you have a favourite race?

Locally, Belfast Titanic is good, as I live 5 minutes away and there are no real problems with it. Good course (that said not much scenery on the bike).

Away from home doing the 2011 Olympic course in London the year before the Olympics came was pretty special. That bike course was very scenic.

One piece of advice you would give a triathlon newbie

Take your time. You will become fitter, you will become faster but you can’t do it if you are injured and most injuries come from doing too much too soon.

Where’s your favourite place to ride your bike?

Mallorca – though I’ve only done it a couple of times

Ironman – Yes/No/Again?

Yes – Plan will be 2019. I like to plan well in advance

What do you do in the real world, outside triathlon?

I am a Chartered Accountant and run my own firm.

What’s next for you in 2017?

The big race this year will be the world championships in Rotterdam. I’m going to go for the Olympic distance.
