What inspired you to try a triathlon?

My old swimming coach was always telling me to give it a go (probably because I wasn’t cutting the mustard at the swimming on its’ own, it’s all about the marginal gains) !

Where and when was your first triathlon? What was the distance?

My first triathlon was 8 years ago at our very own club race in Castlewellan. Back then it was an Olympic Distance and I enjoyed every minute of it, excluding when I lost my googles in the swim, the majority of the 40km bike (the downhill bits when ok) and all of the run.

Do you have a favourite race?

Top of the Mourne, Olympic Distance. Get it entered for 2017!

One piece of advice you would give a triathlon newbie

Join a club, enter a race, get training and have fun!

One of my other top tips is if you are in a race and finding it tough on the bike, just hitch a lift in a Range Rover. This strategy worked well for me several years ago in a race that shall not be named, and meant my legs were nice and fresh going into the run, even got a PB!

Where’s your favourite place to ride your bike?

To the coffee shop!

In all seriousness, I love to head to Strangford and follow the coast road to Newcastle. If the suns out and you have a tail wind, I don’t think there is a better road with more spectacular scenery. However generally when you do get there, it’s a block head wind and lashing rain!

Ironman – Yes/No/Again?

Yes. A few of us have agreed to do another in 2018, however this pact was made in the pub…

What do you do in the real world, outside triathlon?

In the real world I work as an M&E Engineer. Outside of work and training I like to focus on the forth discipline of Triathlon, ‘telling people I do Triathlon.’

What’s next for you in 2017?

I am just coming back after carrying a foot injury for almost 2 years. Following an operation in May of 2016 everything is coming along nicely. This year I hope to do mainly Sprint and a few Olympic races, and my goal is to ensure that I beat McGandy & Preshaw in every race we do. Can’t have them thinking I’ve got slower during my time off!
